Gaby (Hedy Lamarr) arrives in Algiers engaged to a fat, vulgar borderline-loathsome older man who clearly regards her as a trophy bought and paid for. Why she needed this creep isn't clear. What is clear is her falling in love with the jewel thief Pepe Le Moko (Charles Boyer) who abandons the devoted and clinging Ines (Sigrid Gurie) for this right-off-the-boat hothouse beauty. A Parisian police official (Walter Kingsford) is in Algiers determined to collar Pepe. His forays into the casbah meet with no success and quiet derision from both the locals and some of the French police who understand that the casbah is honeycombed with escape routes and populated with folks eager to thwart the gendarmerie.

This really is a good movie that tells an interesting story about interesting characters. Thanks for sharing it. Nice AV quality too, which is good to see.

Charles Boyer does a fantastic job. Heddy Lamar falls for the bad guy gangster. The end surprised me as did the inspector's regard for Pepe. The movie is so good it's a wonder I haven't heard of it before. Almost Film Noir.

An Algiers with Passion
"Algiers" is an extraordinary movie. The Kasbah is the main character of the film and never boring. The use of light and shadow makes me wish more films were made in black and white today.
Pepe la Moko is the ultimate bad boy played with charisma and passion by Mr. Charles Boyer. The immediate intense attraction between the two lovers is wonderfully portrayed.
Hedi Lamar is quietly expressive with her beauty.

entertaining and engaging, this one is good and very much in the noir style, Heddy Lamar is at her best.
I never could stand Charles Boyer but I saw him when he was older & not really acting, just a reprise of early roles. He's very good in this movie and deserves some respect.
There's some sappiness in the script but lots of emotion and earnestness.

Excellent film. Heddy Lamar is wonderful. Charles Boyer is great (he does have one musical number near the end).
Heddy (Playing Gabby) visits Algiers with her fat and older fiance. She visits the Casbah and meets Pepe la Moko (Boyer) and falls in love.
